This is my first encounter with John Barrowman and I've enjoyed his insight and wit enormously. I also have the DVD of his performance in Scotland; funny and GREAT.

I was looking forward to this book as I wanted to read about Barrowman's considerable experiences on the West End musical stage. Instead, I got chapter after chapter of mostly dull stories concerning Barrowman's friends, nieces, nephews, lovers, friends, etc, and the incredibly junvenile stunts and experiences they have had. While there is a bit of theatre lore in here, again, it often degenerates into stories of on stage trickery that make the author seem incredibly unprofessional. In addition, there is a rather vulgar theme of flatulence and bodily functions that runs through the entire book - perhaps some find it funny but I found it nauseating - certainly from a 40 plus accomplished theatre performer, who must have more interesting and fascinating stories to tell.

The only time the book really comes alive is when Barrowman tells of his fears of having contracted AIDS and "coming out" to his parents - wonderfully told and a credit to his fine parents and family. The other time is when he writes a chapter about a friend and flatmate and the tragic life she lived.

A shame.

John Barrowman's book is a hilarious look at his life and career. He has packed a lot of living into his young life. The stories of his loving family and their acceptance of his sexual orientation is heartwarming and touching (especially the story that his mother was hurt that he would be afraid she wouldn't love him because he's gay.) He has made himself a TV icon with his Captain Jack character, but his life as a musical theater star is equally as interesting. This is a candid look at a talented performer. I laughed out loud while reading this book, and can't wait for the sequel! To the BBC: bring us more Torchwood!!!

As a person curious about this young man who sings so well this book answers many questions. If one is a theater person the type of stories strike a chord. He is a bit coy, but this is a person who is now really a UK (vs. US) star and the book is written for that audience. But all is not gossip, however, as he relates a poignant story of a young woman who died and a tale of a situation where he and his lover might well have died. We can watch him now on BBC channel's Torchwood. It would be nice to have him performing music on this side of the Atlantic again.

Cloris is pretty amazing but I don't care for her, never have, and the purpose of reading this book was to see if a good book might be written by an actress whose work has always turned me off. Well, it certainly is a good book, and I have even revised my opinion of her as an actress slightly. She was never a real beauty but she had brains and a big, Rabelaisian spirit, and she was ambitious and lived life to the fullest! She should have played Auntie Mame, I bet she would have done well.

I remember seeing her as the repressed coach's wife in THE LAST PICTURE SHOW and it's fun to hear the behind the scenes gossip about what was going on there in Texas. Seems like nobody really liked her co-star very much, the young cute Joseph Bottoms. She makes him seem like a bit of a psychopath, thus it makes her winning performance seem all the more unexpected.

Those were her glory days and yet they seem all too short. George Englund's status as the best friend of Marlon Brando, and the big family of boys she gave birth to, left huge holes in her resume so that when she became a star, she seemed already old, and casting her in those Mel Brooks movies as a sort of human freak was the icing on the horror cake. We never got to see her young, just in a parade of bigger than life crazy roles. The funniest part of the book is her chapter about having to play the mother to so many younger stars and how that made her feel! The least funny part was when her husband fell in love with young, luscious Joan Collins and Cloris was left holding the bag. It must make him feel weird being the ghost writer for his wife's memoirs, when he himself was such a schmuck in so many ways. Yet they're still together, which says something for love. Her affairs with Gene Hackman and Peter Viertel are glossed over, and her plans to make love with Andy Williams and Ed Asner sort of comical. I just read Andy Williams' memoirs to see what her has to say about his lust for Cloris, and he says nothing, perhaps for legal reasons?

I've never had cancer, but, just before age 22, I developed a rare illness - minocycline-induced pseudotumor cerebri. It lasted for several months and I have never felt worse. The symptoms were hard to describe and I didn't always appear (visibly) to be ill. It was a very difficult time for me.

It was caused by a medicine prescribed by my dermatologist. It was supposed to clear up my skin. I was NOT supposed to make me sick. In fact, the doctor didn't even mention that there were ANY possible "side effects." He was the doctor. I was just 21 and wanted clear skin. - It was inconceivable to me that a medicine for something so simple could possibly be dangerous.

I later learned, through my own research, that I was predisposed to be more likely to be affected by it due to my weight and other factors. (While I did weigh more than my ideal weight, I was not obese.)

This book gives an interesting perspective and makes me more determined than ever to take charge of my health and be my own advocate. Kudos to Fran for sharing what she learned and making us all more aware.

Let me start by saying I am a HUGE fan of Ms. Drescher! I have the seasons of The Nanny on DVD and have seen every episode many, many times! I love that show! I watched and liked her short-lived show "Living With Fran", and bought and read her first book Enter Whining.

However, this book just made me angry. First lets start with the cover with her "be Strong" tank top...I feel that frankly, she was not really all that strong. I don't know why she wrote the book as a "strong, cancer survivor"?? I guess that is how she feels. But, I feel that she was just a lucky celebrity. She was lucky in that she had only a small cancerous tumor, and had it removed. That was it. I don't know how she had to be all that strong. I really don't feel she had that much to do with it.

She didn't have to have emergency surgery to keep her alive. She did not have to suffer through terrible chemo and radiation, she did not have to deal with any re-occurances. Getting through all those things definately make you a strong survivor!!

All she did was be able to afford to see many, many specialists. Get star treatment by getting fast appoinments, and getting the actual doctors to call her right back. She got a private nurse at the hospital. She had servants at home. She got to take all the time she needed to recover, without worrying about the bills piling up or taking care of the kids or losing her job, or how to pay the massive medical bills...things real people deal with. What did she get to do, vacation in France!

Now, before you get on my case, I had cancer myself. I, like Fran, went many years without it being diagnosed. My cancer was very rare, and was very large, and almost killed me. I had to have emergency surgery to save my life. I was sick for many years before I sort-of recovered.

But, since I did not have to endure chemo and radiation, and I have not had any reoccurances, Thank God,... I don't consider myself a strong cancer survivor at all. I just consider myself lucky to be alive. I think Fran should have just been thankful for her good fortune, and gone on with her life rather than write this book.

I am glad I didn't pay attention to some of the reviewers of this book. Once I started reading the book, I couldn't put it down. The author used a lot of back ground information to give credence to what General Stewart accomplished during WWII, which I found very useful. He also mentions at times how he was involved with the war. In my opinion, this is an outstanding piece of work about the rarely mentioned military life of a true American hero. I am just sad I never knew about this part of his life before. This man never mentioned or bragged about his distinguished military career. He was just proud to have served his country. He makes me proud to be an American and proud of this great country.

I am a WWII buff and anyone with the same interest should also find this book an excellent addition to your collection. It should be of interest to Jimmy Stewart fans as well as anyone wanting to get an inside look at this dangerous job as bomber pilot and those who rode along in those machines.

I was given this book for Christmas (at my urging). I immediately started reading, excited to learn more about a truly wonderful person and war hero. By the time I got to the half way point I wanted to stop reading, only continuing as I was hoping it would redeem itself...It did not.

To me, Mr. Stewart's name was put on the cover simply to sell the book; it is nothing but a clip collection of excerpts from other books, disjointed commentary and other assorted oddness. I believe no research was done for this book, the author simply put his own recollections to paper, (at the authors own admission, they were not close and only served in proximity to each other, not together) to prove this, I spent a mere day online researching his wartime record and had gathered much more interesting and relevant information than the book, and that is too bad, Mr. Stewart was truly a war hero, just like all of the other Joe's in the Eighth, he never ducked his duty (as the other reviewer pointed out, he enlisted before PH).

I cannot recommend this book to anyone, if you want to learn about the air war in Europe pick up any number of excellent books on the subject (I can recommend), if you want to know more about Mr. Stewart, pick up his biography.

I am a person who always reads the reviews on amazon, never writes them. I picked up this book simply because I loved Chris Farley's comedy. Hilarious. Although it was known that he had his problems with addictions, i don't think i ever realized how bad it truly was. When i first started this book i wasn't quite convinced i would enjoy the way it is put together. After finishing it, I realize it was perfect. By the time you are finished with the book you really feel like you knew the real Farley. The last act is by far the hardest to read. As someone who has a brother who battles with such addictions to almost this extreme it really touched home. Chris Farley was a beautiful human being (which you really come to realize) and you really do get that he TRIED to overcome his demons. He will be missed, one can only imagine what amazing things could of happened had he survived. Pick up this book, will not disappoint.

This book made me laugh and cry. Chris Farley was an extraordinarily talented and unselfish human being who tragically had an addiction to drugs and alcohol.

One of my favorite Farley movies is Tommy Boy and all of his friends and family said that Chris was playing himself. He cared so much about making people laugh that many did not know he was crying for help.

He died way too young and the world has lost a remarkable comedian and a truly spiritual man.

The fact that Farley was able to do as much as he did was really incredible - considering his constant struggles with booze mostly. The book was really good - clearly there are things in there that the Farley family did not agree with but they added for the sake of different perspectives. You quickly learn that everyone had a similar outlook on the guy; he was a warm-hearted lovable fat-man that struggled to stay sober because despite making everyone else happy, he could not find happiness himself. The book takes you through the SNL years, his movies, and ulitmately his death. If you followed Farley even casually, you'll enjoy the book becuase of the writers that contributed their stories, includling Chris Rock, David Spade, Tim Meadows and his brothers. It's honest, funny, shocking and most of all frustrating because you SO want him to live but you know he doesn't.

I am an avid fan of the work of Chris Farley. I even enjoyed some of the bad work such as "Black Sheep". The scope of the project that became "The Chris Farley Show" is unique and the way it was written gives insight into the life of Farley. Yet the focus of the book was tilted toward his self-destruction. It results in one of the saddest books I have ever read.

Most people prefer to remember Farley for his work on Saturday Night Live and even some of his movies. This may be my biggest objection to the book. The section involving the SNL days (Act II) was far too brief. Stories about how sketches were written and even noting some of his bad sketches would have added something to the story. The book makes it apparent that when he was not working, Farley spiraled into substance abuse with reckless abandon. This was particularly true in the layoff time between movies. Even the people around him had the sense that Farley would live a short life.

The book did not finch away from uncomfortable details including the vices and Farley's final days. It even addressed the alleged "Belushi Obsession" of Farley which cause him to emulate the life of the early SNL star.

Perhaps my review will be unpopular, and I do regret that I did not like the book. The way in which Farley died is the aspect of him that I least want to remember about him. While "The Chris Farley Show" does not glorify this aspect of his life, it certainly overemphasizes it.

I absolutely loved this book and could not put it down in the 2 days it took me to read it. What made Chris Farley great was his ability to capture the audience. He was one of the few comedians whose true love was making other people happy. The best way he knew how was through the medium of laughter.

This biography captures the stories that make Chris Farley a comedic icon. It also does an outstanding job illustrating his inevitable downfall, which definitely broke my heart.

I enjoyed reading the different anecdotes from a variety of his closest friends and family. Their first hand accounts were insightful and showed Farley's life from a variety of perspectives.

I feel like this is an excellent tribute to a kind-hearted, talented, yet troubled man. It's a compelling account of his entire life and gives important life lessons along the way as well.

The prose is wonderful. The Kindle formatting leaves much to be desired, though: there are multiple typos, words overwritten on each other, cases of errant punctuation and so on. Particularly frustrating: the book is a collection of blog posts separated by editorial from the author. In the physical book, it's easy to discern where a blog post ends and the commentary begins. On the Kindle, it's quite challenging.

A few years ago, I stumbled upon Wil Wheaton's blog, commonly abbreviated as WWdN, by accident, and boy am I glad that I did. Being a huge fan of Star Trek:TNG, years after Wil's departure and the show's ultimate end run after seven seasons, I had completely lost track of his career. He sort of became an afterthought in my subconscious mind, and I'm sure that I'm not the only person who had just assumed that he was probably strung out on drugs like so many child actors had become before him. What a pleasant surprise it was to find out that not only had Wil become a fantastic author, he had also become a husband, father and an all around well-adjusted, down-to-earth guy in general. He isn't one to flaunt his celebrity status and remains a genuinely humble guy to this very day.

After reading Wil's blog and Just a Geek, I really got the impression that I had gotten to know Wil Wheaton on a personal level. His writing style invites his readers into the most intimate details of his daily life and his relationships with his wife, Anne, and their children, Ryan and Nolan.

His narrative style of writing makes his readers feel as if they are a part of his world. After reading this book, I not only came away with the impression that I had gotten to know Wil Wheaton, more importantly, I truly like the person that he's become. His quick wit and honesty in his writing style really paints a picture of an average guy who just happens to be a celebrity. I highly recommend this book. Get to know the real Wil Wheaton. You'll find that not only is he a really nice guy, he's also someone that you can relate to.

Instead of Christmas cards, excuse me Mr. Billy Crystal, Holiday cards, I'm seriously thinking of giving this book instead. Billy Crystal has done an awesome Valentine to his family. This is the only book that I actually laughed out loud. I loved Billy Crystal's Grandpa and his Aunt Shirley. I'm not Jewish, but I do have a cajun "Aunt Shirley". When they were little, my Dad used to tease my neices and nephews with his false teeth falling out of his mouth. Everyone will recognize their own Grandpa and Aunt Shirley. Thank you Billy Crystal for making such a poignant book that will pierce your heart and warm your soul.

I have been a fan of Goldie's since I was a child in the 70's. I was looking forward to reading her autobiography because I expected she would discuss at length the "behind the scenes" details on making the movies she's known for such as Private Benjamin, Best Friends, Seems Like Old Times, Overboard, etc. I was not disappointed at all to soon learn that this was about her life, apart from her "job" as an actor. I had no idea that this woman has led such an incredibly rich life, without considering her films. Reading about her childhood, her relationships with her father, mother, sister, partner, and children were all moving and revealing. What was also interesting was her search for answers about life, and what she has learned along the way. I was surprised how wise this person is, and I have a newfound respect for Ms. Hawn. I applaud her for all work she has done off-screen in addition to on. I was even brought to tears on more than one occassion in some very touching and well-written parts of her story. So, although I wanted to read all the hollywood gossip about her working relationships with Chevy Chase, Warren Beatty, Meryl Streep, Woody Allen, etc., I fully appreciated the story she chose to tell instead about her personal journey through life. And I didn't want it to end. I love Goldie even more now!

As someone who might possibly have actual children in his future and not just the furry variety, it seemed to me that it might be a good idea to learn about this very real and, as far as I'm concerned, horribly misunderstood issue. Having read up on Brooke over the years and knowing about her struggle with PPD I decided to read her account of it. The audio CD version is narrated by Brooke herself. I'm often skeptical about authors attempting to narrate their own works since some just do not have the voice for it. Douglas Adams and Stephen King, while their voices are in no way annoying to me, just don't do their own works justice as far as I'm concerned. That's not the case with Brooke Shields. Not only do her feelings of fear, guilt, despair and the like come through in her narration, but she just has a very pleasant voice to listen to. One thing I liked about this book is that while her main focus was of course on the negative emotions she was experiencing and the frightening visions she had of harm coming to her daughter, the story has just enough humor throughout that I couldn't put it down for long. I'm glad I took the time to read Brooke's account. It sometimes amazes me that a person who goes through something as traumatic and frightening could want to have another child, if only because the fear of falling back into depression is very real. And now she has not one but two daughters. Needless to say I found this book both interesting and informative, not the least because Brooke herself narrated it. She's got a very pleasant voice for narration as I said.

I purchased this book at the dollar store and am so glad I did. Not because I liked the book, but because it was not worth any more than one dollar! Down Came the Rain was more like a diary of Brooke Shield's life. Diaries are personal and should be kept to themselves. And that is exactly what she should have done with this book. Kept it to herself. This book is all about Brooke. Her problems, her thoughts, her feelings, her this, her that. She never cares about anyone but herself. The whole time reading the book I kept thinking to myself how sorry I felt for her children and her husband.

Brooke is depressed. Who hasn't been depressed at one time or another? You deal with it and go on. But because she dwells on the fact her entire life, she has sucked herself right into a pity party and wrote a book to invite everyone to come join her. Her book makes everyone with a tad bit of depression excuse themselves for feeling that way. There are no excuses! Pull yourself out of it and get on with your life!

A few things she wrote I thought were odd: She used fertility treatments to conceive. Doesn't fertility treatments alter your hormones and cause depression and irrational behavior? So of course she is going to go through these emotions, we don't need to write a book about it. She then takes a job in LA where she would fly to from New York. She says "It didn't seem worth it to bring Rowan on a long plane ride, so I decided to go alone." Since when is it not "worth it" to bring your baby with you?! Was it that much of an inconvenience for Brooke to take her child along? This is her selfish attitude through the entire book! All about Brooke, what Brooke wants, what Brooke feels, what Brooke needs. YUCK!

The moment of complete disappointment in having read this book did not come until the VERY end~ page 218 out of 222! Had it come right in the beginning I would have never read the book! Brooke writes about "accidentally" giving her child "a hickey". Brooke had "smothered" Rowan with kisses only to realize later that there was a "reddish mark with tiny black and blue spots" on her neck. Saying... "the odd thing is that I have never even given Chris a hickey like that!" HELLLLO! You have to "suck" to leave a hickey! This is not love, that is child abuse! Sexual child abuse! That isn't even a kiss! A child's kiss would NEVER include a sucking motion! UGH I cannot even think about it! To a CHILD she did this!

She then goes on to describe "chewing bits of food in my own mouth before giving them to her to eat". I have never heard of anyone "chewing" food before giving it to a child. Sure you split a grape, or take a bite off a cantaloupe to give to a child. But chewing it first? That is disgusting. How about when she "kissed her bloody lip, and the metallic taste of blood made me weak in the knees". Why would you kiss a bloody lip? Wouldn't you wipe it off, clean it up and asses the situation of the lip first?

It seems to me that Brooke is trying too hard to be what she thinks a mother should be. Trying to convince herself that these are things she needs to do to show everyone around her that she is a good mother. As this book reveals, she hasn't got a clue.

As someone who might possibly have actual children in his future and not just the furry variety, it seemed to me that it might be a good idea to learn about this very real and, as far as I'm concerned, horribly misunderstood issue. Having read up on Brooke over the years and knowing about her struggle with PPD I decided to read her account of it. The audio CD version is narrated by Brooke herself. I'm often skeptical about authors attempting to narrate their own works since some just do not have the voice for it. Douglas Adams and Stephen King, while their voices are in no way annoying to me, just don't do their own works justice as far as I'm concerned. That's not the case with Brooke Shields. Not only do her feelings of fear, guilt, despair and the like come through in her narration, but she just has a very pleasant voice to listen to. One thing I liked about this book is that while her main focus was of course on the negative emotions she was experiencing and the frightening visions she had of harm coming to her daughter, the story has just enough humor throughout that I couldn't put it down for long. I'm glad I took the time to read Brooke's account. It sometimes amazes me that a person who goes through something as traumatic and frightening could want to have another child, if only because the fear of falling back into depression is very real. And now she has not one but two daughters. Needless to say I found this book both interesting and informative, not the least because Brooke herself narrated it. She's got a very pleasant voice for narration as I said.

I purchased this book at the dollar store and am so glad I did. Not because I liked the book, but because it was not worth any more than one dollar! Down Came the Rain was more like a diary of Brooke Shield's life. Diaries are personal and should be kept to themselves. And that is exactly what she should have done with this book. Kept it to herself. This book is all about Brooke. Her problems, her thoughts, her feelings, her this, her that. She never cares about anyone but herself. The whole time reading the book I kept thinking to myself how sorry I felt for her children and her husband.

Brooke is depressed. Who hasn't been depressed at one time or another? You deal with it and go on. But because she dwells on the fact her entire life, she has sucked herself right into a pity party and wrote a book to invite everyone to come join her. Her book makes everyone with a tad bit of depression excuse themselves for feeling that way. There are no excuses! Pull yourself out of it and get on with your life!

A few things she wrote I thought were odd: She used fertility treatments to conceive. Doesn't fertility treatments alter your hormones and cause depression and irrational behavior? So of course she is going to go through these emotions, we don't need to write a book about it. She then takes a job in LA where she would fly to from New York. She says "It didn't seem worth it to bring Rowan on a long plane ride, so I decided to go alone." Since when is it not "worth it" to bring your baby with you?! Was it that much of an inconvenience for Brooke to take her child along? This is her selfish attitude through the entire book! All about Brooke, what Brooke wants, what Brooke feels, what Brooke needs. YUCK!

The moment of complete disappointment in having read this book did not come until the VERY end~ page 218 out of 222! Had it come right in the beginning I would have never read the book! Brooke writes about "accidentally" giving her child "a hickey". Brooke had "smothered" Rowan with kisses only to realize later that there was a "reddish mark with tiny black and blue spots" on her neck. Saying... "the odd thing is that I have never even given Chris a hickey like that!" HELLLLO! You have to "suck" to leave a hickey! This is not love, that is child abuse! Sexual child abuse! That isn't even a kiss! A child's kiss would NEVER include a sucking motion! UGH I cannot even think about it! To a CHILD she did this!

She then goes on to describe "chewing bits of food in my own mouth before giving them to her to eat". I have never heard of anyone "chewing" food before giving it to a child. Sure you split a grape, or take a bite off a cantaloupe to give to a child. But chewing it first? That is disgusting. How about when she "kissed her bloody lip, and the metallic taste of blood made me weak in the knees". Why would you kiss a bloody lip? Wouldn't you wipe it off, clean it up and asses the situation of the lip first?

It seems to me that Brooke is trying too hard to be what she thinks a mother should be. Trying to convince herself that these are things she needs to do to show everyone around her that she is a good mother. As this book reveals, she hasn't got a clue.

This book is useless to those who are actually dealing with depression. If you are dealing with true depression and not just feeling sorry for yourself, please do your research, find a better book and someone to talk to. Get help, but don't get this book.

Life is full of choices. Right now, yours is whether or not to buy the autobiography of a mid-grade, kind of hammy actor.

Am I supposed to know this guy? you think to yourself.

No, and that's exactly the point. Bookstores are chock full of household name actors and their high stakes shenanigans. I don't want to be a spoilsport, but we've all been down that road before.

Case in point: look to your left - see that Judy Garland book? You don't need that, you know plenty about her already - great voice, crappy life. Now look to your right at the Charlton Heston book. You don't need to cough up hard-earned dough for that either. You know his story too - great voice, crappy toupee.

The truth is that though you might not have a clue who I am, there are countless working stiffs like me out there, grinding away every day at the wheel of fortune.

If Chins Could Kill: Confessions of a B Movie Actor is my first book, and I invite you to ride with me through the choppy waters of blue collar Hollywood.

Okay, so buy the damned book already and read like the wind!

Last week my husband and I were browsing the bookstore, and I stumbled across If Chins Could Kill. The title immediately caught my attention, and as a fan of the Evil Dead films I was intrigued and amused. However, I walked out of the store empty-handed.

The next morning I woke up with the closest thing I've felt to a pregnancy craving for a book. I just had to read If Chins Could Kill, and it wasn't long before I was back at the bookstore, hunting Campbell down.

I was not at all disappointed. Campbell's autobiography, focusing on the development of his performance career, holds all of the charm and charisma that the actor himself can claim. Here is a faithful "behind the scenes look" at a cult-classic B actor, and the development of some of the most beloved B-movies ever created.

The book itself is fast-paced and witty, and was apparently written with a very clear understanding of the intended audience. Bruce Campbell's narrative almost reads like a film as he takes audiences through his mishaps and triumphs.

If Chins Could Kill is a gratifying autobiography which lives up to all reader expectations. I would highly recommend the book to any with an interest in Campbell, B-movies, or even just biographies in general.

Yes, I know. I swore off Hollywood-type memoirs a few weeks ago, but this book was a Christmas present and merits consideration if only for the title. It was written a few years back, but is still relevant to people who may actually know who Bruce Campbell is. (One of my, ahem, better-educated friends did not.) Campbell, as anyone with a pop culture awareness knows, is the star of the "Evil Dead" series of movies, those being "Evil Dead," "Evil Dead II," and "Army of Darkness." He's also been in some, quote, Major Motion Pictures, like "Spiderman." But, mostly, his career has been as a B-movie actor, and his recollections of how he and his friends started out making Super 8 films and sort of stumbled into success with the first "Evil Dead" is an intriguing one. Like many memoir writers, Campbell leaves out some of the juicier details of his private life, but that's to be expected, I guess. He also spends more time than necessary describing his early films, while giving short shrift to his later ones. But, to his credit, he does devote substantial verbiage to the whole Hercules-Xena:Warrior Princess phase of his career and talks not quite enough about his one-season wonder, The Adventures of Briscoe County Jr. The book could also have used a better copy editor. There are a few too many misspellings for my taste. (I mean, doesn't everyone know it's George Maharis, not George Maharas?) Still, it's worth your time, especially if you want to know how people who aren't actually movie "stars" make a living.

I, as I'm sure any and all who purchase this book is, am a great Bruce Campbell fan. I don't belong to the deadites, nor to the Xena/Hercules fans; I just think he's funny. This book is, as one would expect, also very amusing. It is not laugh out loud funny, nor should it be, but there are quite a few amusing anecdotes and the way in which Campbell writes is in itself quite clever and witty. The reader gets to know not a few things about independent filmmaking, and indeed big budget filmmaking as seen from the less than spectacularly glamourous aspect of a star director or leading actor/actress. I was all caught up in the spirit of the indie-film after reading this book, and was actually ready to go ahead and try to produce a flick of my own.

I guess this book is just about what you'd expect it to be. It has that certain Bruce Campbellishness that makes it just so good. I will, however, join those who say, that there is a certain lack of depth in some parts of the book. That doesn't really subtract that much, though. It is still clever and well written.

Any Bruce Campbell fan will like this, I should think.

Here is a faithful "behind the scenes look" at a cult-classic B actor, and the development of some of the most beloved B-movies ever created.

The book itself is fast-paced and witty, and was apparently written with a very clear understanding of the intended audience. Bruce Campbell's narrative almost reads like a film as he takes audiences through his mishaps and triumphs.

If Chins Could Kill is a gratifying autobiography which lives up to all reader expectations. I would highly recommend the book to any with an interest in Campbell, B-movies, or even just biographies in general.

Yes, I know. I swore off Hollywood-type memoirs a few weeks ago, but this book was a Christmas present and merits consideration if only for the title. It was written a few years back, but is still relevant to people who may actually know who Bruce Campbell is. (One of my, ahem, better-educated friends did not.) Campbell, as anyone with a pop culture awareness knows, is the star of the "Evil Dead" series of movies, those being "Evil Dead," "Evil Dead II," and "Army of Darkness." He's also been in some, quote, Major Motion Pictures, like "Spiderman." But, mostly, his career has been as a B-movie actor, and his recollections of how he and his friends started out making Super 8 films and sort of stumbled into success with the first "Evil Dead" is an intriguing one. Like many memoir writers, Campbell leaves out some of the juicier details of his private life, but that's to be expected, I guess. He also spends more time than necessary describing his early films, while giving short shrift to his later ones. But, to his credit, he does devote substantial verbiage to the whole Hercules-Xena:Warrior Princess phase of his career and talks not quite enough about his one-season wonder, The Adventures of Briscoe County Jr. The book could also have used a better copy editor. There are a few too many misspellings for my taste. (I mean, doesn't everyone know it's George Maharis, not George Maharas?) Still, it's worth your time, especially if you want to know how people who aren't actually movie "stars" make a living.

I, as I'm sure any and all who purchase this book is, am a great Bruce Campbell fan. I don't belong to the deadites, nor to the Xena/Hercules fans; I just think he's funny. This book is, as one would expect, also very amusing. It is not laugh out loud funny, nor should it be, but there are quite a few amusing anecdotes and the way in which Campbell writes is in itself quite clever and witty. The reader gets to know not a few things about independent filmmaking, and indeed big budget filmmaking as seen from the less than spectacularly glamourous aspect of a star director or leading actor/actress. I was all caught up in the spirit of the indie-film after reading this book, and was actually ready to go ahead and try to produce a flick of my own.

I guess this book is just about what you'd expect it to be. It has that certain Bruce Campbellishness that makes it just so good. I will, however, join those who say, that there is a certain lack of depth in some parts of the book. That doesn't really subtract that much, though. It is still clever and well written.

Any Bruce Campbell fan will like this, I should think.

By essentially playing herself, Snoop (in real life) was able to quit The Life (Thug, drug dealer) and enter the world.

Born a 3-lb, cross-eyed crack baby in East Baltimore...Ms Pearson was a GIRL IN THE 'HOOD....on the stoop...on the corners..in the alleys...in court..and in Jessup (the Womens Penitentiary) at age 15. This is her story, told in her words, in her rhythm...no excuses, no Sugar Coat.

I don't usually read celebrity Bios..especially those written by the under-30 set...but, as i said, this one reached out to me. I am an unreconsructed fan of THE WIRE...and lament its passing (but all good things should end when it's their time)....it's glorious triumphs and imperfections..The character of SNOOP..with her raspy voice...her Corner Boy threads..her nail gun and bucket of quicklime,was an especial favorite...hell, i wanted to bring her home..to liven up the town where i live...

This book will never win a prize in the White world..but i thought it was a compelling read....not "fluff" , or just a voyeuristic peek at a lifestyle i'll never live. Ms Pearson lived THE LIFE and then turned it around..into something better for herself....through Luck, or Fate, or Grace...one. (****)

First things first: "Grace After Midnight" is 233 pages, and The Wire isn't even mentioned until 219. So if you're looking for any inside information on that great television show, look elsewhere. Also, if you're looking for a good book, look elsewhere: this flimsy memoir has little of value in it.

First of all, the book is incredibly short. 233 pages, and that counts at least 25 blank pages. Not to mention the fact that the spacing is generous and new chapters come quickly. But these steps were clearly necessary, for there's not enough material to fill the book. The authors even resort to telling the stories of other people Felicia met in prison, perhaps partly to provide local color but mainly to pad the length of the book. So you're not getting a whole lot for your $11.19, but that wouldn't matter much if the book was interesting in any other way. Alas, it's not. It's a memoir that feels incredibly programmed and fake, which may have something to do with the fact that it's co-written by David Ritz, who apparently makes his living writing autobiographies. The opening pages of the book list no fewer than 14 other memoirs he's had a hand in--from Sinbad's to Don Rickles'--and you can really feel it running through the book.

So basically this book offers an incredibly slight, programmed-by-white-guy memoir of growing up in Baltimore involving a major character in a fascinating television show which gives little detail about the show. If this appeals to you, buy it, but if you're unsure than I surely recommend you do not.

Much like the show that made her famous, Snoop doesn't make her redemption easy, nor does she oversell the situation - she's still a flawed young woman, one who's struggling with her life and her choices. I have long been a fan of M*A*S*H and originally read this book because of that fact only. This book was a real treat to read though. Alda is one of the best, raw, most literal writers out there. He writes with such simplicity, rather than phoney self uplifting, he writes simply what he thinks, in the most basic way. I enjoyed this book more than the one that follows it, Things I Overheard While Talking to Myself, but both books are fantastic. Shortly after finishing his second book. I wrote Alda saying how much I enjoyed them. Hardly expecting a response, I received a very short, yet heartfelt letter from him less than a month from when I had shipped my own out. An incredibly smart man, don't pass up this book!

The book is an almost-perfect confection. Delicious, but something, something is .... missing.

Mr. Alda's writing style is clear, clean. I like the philosophical jewels he tucks into a paragraph for readers to pick up or not. Some of his imagery is superb. On Larry Gelbart fixing a script: "Larry would come right over on his bicycle, take out his wrench, and reach into the speech to tighten a word here or knock a phrase sideways there, and pretty soon it was sailing again."

When I read the story of his poor, dead, stuffed dog, I felt a little underwhelmed, and wondered how he would use the story later to warrant its place in the book's title. Well, he did carry that off quite well, and without hitting the reader over the head with the lessons.

I was touched by Mr. Alda's descriptions of his relationship with each of his parents, the father he adored/competed with/sometimes looked down on, and the mother he hated/loved. I felt sad for the tragedy of his mother's mental illness: the rage he felt toward her, but also the prison in which she resided without treatment.

I laughed out loud when he told the story about pulling the cockroach out of his pants pocket while on stage.

Although Mr. Alda allows the reader glimpses of his life with Arlene and their daughters, I wish there had been more depth there, and I think this could have been possible without compromising their privacy. Did Arlene continue with her music? How did she come to be a children's book author and photographer (as revealed only on the book jacket)? Did his daughters produce the seven grandchildren by immaculate conception or were there partners involved - I mean, he names the grandchildren, but there is utterly no mention of their fathers. He makes reference to getting the girls somewhat involved in acting when they were adolescents, but then makes no mention of their professional lives later.

I have long been a fan of M*A*S*H and originally read this book because of that fact only. This book was a real treat to read though. Alda is one of the best, raw, most literal writers out there. He writes with such simplicity, rather than phoney self uplifting, he writes simply what he thinks, in the most basic way. I enjoyed this book more than the one that follows it, Things I Overheard While Talking to Myself, but both books are fantastic. Shortly after finishing his second book. I wrote Alda saying how much I enjoyed them. Hardly expecting a response, I received a very short, yet heartfelt letter from him less than a month from when I had shipped my own out. An incredibly smart man, don't pass up this book!

Laugh out loud funny at times. Quite poignant at others. The man is as deep as the serious side of his character, Hawkeye Pierce. But it's not about Hawkeye! Thanks Amazon and thank you Mr. Alda!

The book is an almost-perfect confection. Delicious, but something, something is .... missing.

Mr. Alda's writing style is clear, clean. I like the philosophical jewels he tucks into a paragraph for readers to pick up or not. Some of his imagery is superb. On Larry Gelbart fixing a script: "Larry would come right over on his bicycle, take out his wrench, and reach into the speech to tighten a word here or knock a phrase sideways there, and pretty soon it was sailing again."

When I read the story of his poor, dead, stuffed dog, I felt a little underwhelmed, and wondered how he would use the story later to warrant its place in the book's title. Well, he did carry that off quite well, and without hitting the reader over the head with the lessons.

I was touched by Mr. Alda's descriptions of his relationship with each of his parents, the father he adored/competed with/sometimes looked down on, and the mother he hated/loved. I felt sad for the tragedy of his mother's mental illness: the rage he felt toward her, but also the prison in which she resided without treatment.

I laughed out loud when he told the story about pulling the cockroach out of his pants pocket while on stage.

Although Mr. Alda allows the reader glimpses of his life with Arlene and their daughters, I wish there had been more depth there, and I think this could have been possible without compromising their privacy. Did Arlene continue with her music? How did she come to be a children's book author and photographer (as revealed only on the book jacket)? Did his daughters produce the seven grandchildren by immaculate conception or were there partners involved - I mean, he names the grandchildren, but there is utterly no mention of their fathers. He makes reference to getting the girls somewhat involved in acting when they were adolescents, but then makes no mention of their professional lives later.

Alda's previous offering, "Never Have Your Dog Stuffed", was a superb biographical work. I was compelled to read it a couple of times, and this does not happen very often. This book, however, left me with very little except the feeling that Mr. Alda may have been trying to cash in on the popularity of his first book.

The book is a gathering of excerpts from speeches given by Mr. Alda along with some biographical notes on each speech. This standard presentation is followed in each case by an explanation of what we, the readers, are supposed to get out of the whole thing.

Although a few of the chapters were a bit interesting, the overall effect left me wondering what the point was....if there was any in the first place.

If anyone really needs a copy, let me know.....you can have mine.

I've always loved the characters Alan Alda played and I have a feeling that he's very much like his characters, smart, quick-witted, sensitive, hilarious, easy going, self-depricating. philosophical, and always willing to share his opinions, and also willing to listen to other's opinions. He seems to have great heart. Some of the negative reviews on this site were disappointing to read. It always amazes me how so much of human nature is so quick to judge and assumes the worst in people. I think the older we get we realize what in life is important and we see things through more forgiving eyes. Yes, and I think, basically, that was one of Alan's top messages. You can lead a horse to water....but...(you know the saying) I enjoyed his book and will buy his next one too.

Wow. That was nothing like Never Have Your Dog Stuffed.

Whereas Alan Alda's prior book was mainly biographical, this one is simply his commentary and analysis of the various commencement and other speeches he's given. If you're extremely partial to Alan Alda or his liberal politics you might find this book insightful and affirming, otherwise it may sound presumptuous and a bit conceited (with a generous dose of hubris). Not that I don't think he makes some good points - love your children, don't pollute, try to do good - but even then it sounds wishful and sappy. The book is best when he sticks to some of his personal experiences (I liked chapter 6, about better understanding Thomas Jefferson through a Chinese man even if it was a bit of a stretch), but it drags when he quotes the advice he offered (even though some of the advice actually sounded pretty good). Some of the political stuff isn't even very pertinent anymore (he obviously continues to mourn losing the Equal Rights Amendment fight), and he openly admits that some of his topics weren't even a good idea at the time he presented them. I have no doubt he is sincere and passionate but it's just not very interesting. Hardly anyone actually listens to those speeches when they're given, and absent the "commencement" setting, I'm not really sure who'd want to listen to them after the fact. I recommend skipping this one.
