From his Glaswegian childhood and American adolescence to his starring role in the Doctor Who spinoff Torchwood, this memoir traces the life and career of actor John Barrowman. John made a name for himself with remarkable West End achievements, including an Olivier Award nomination and success in the movies The Producers and De-Lovely. Television success was also assured when Torchwood won a Best Drama BAFTA. John also lays bare his personal life: his emigration as a child, coming out to his family, turning down a job at Disney, and his civil partnership with long-term partner Scott Gill. Revelatory and insightful, told with real heart and characteristic Barrowman charm, this is a wonderful tale of how one boy achieved his dreams.

Interesting and informatife book.

It arrived timely and in perfect condition.

I have no complaints re this item.

This is my first encounter with John Barrowman and I've enjoyed his insight and wit enormously. I also have the DVD of his performance in Scotland; funny and GREAT.

 "Waste of Time" 2009-12-21
By R. Dubrow (Philadelphia)
I was looking forward to this book as I wanted to read about Barrowman's considerable experiences on the West End musical stage. Instead, I got chapter after chapter of mostly dull stories concerning Barrowman's friends, nieces, nephews, lovers, friends, etc, and the incredibly junvenile stunts and experiences they have had. While there is a bit of theatre lore in here, again, it often degenerates into stories of on stage trickery that make the author seem incredibly unprofessional. In addition, there is a rather vulgar theme of flatulence and bodily functions that runs through the entire book - perhaps some find it funny but I found it nauseating - certainly from a 40 plus accomplished theatre performer, who must have more interesting and fascinating stories to tell.

The only time the book really comes alive is when Barrowman tells of his fears of having contracted AIDS and "coming out" to his parents - wonderfully told and a credit to his fine parents and family. The other time is when he writes a chapter about a friend and flatmate and the tragic life she lived.

A shame.

"Hilarious look at a Creative Man" 2009-09-25
By Marybeth (Illinois)
John Barrowman's book is a hilarious look at his life and career. He has packed a lot of living into his young life. The stories of his loving family and their acceptance of his sexual orientation is heartwarming and touching (especially the story that his mother was hurt that he would be afraid she wouldn't love him because he's gay.) He has made himself a TV icon with his Captain Jack character, but his life as a musical theater star is equally as interesting. This is a candid look at a talented performer. I laughed out loud while reading this book, and can't wait for the sequel! To the BBC: bring us more Torchwood!!!

"The title says a lot" 2009-09-18
By Showman Singer (Alexandria, VA USA)
As a person curious about this young man who sings so well this book answers many questions. If one is a theater person the type of stories strike a chord. He is a bit coy, but this is a person who is now really a UK (vs. US) star and the book is written for that audience. But all is not gossip, however, as he relates a poignant story of a young woman who died and a tale of a situation where he and his lover might well have died. We can watch him now on BBC channel's Torchwood. It would be nice to have him performing music on this side of the Atlantic again.

Perhaps best known for his classic movie lines, such as Fill your hands, you sons-a-bitches from True Grit, the late actor John Wayne often displayed a spontaneous and biting wit away from the screen as well. This gem of inspiration contains Wayne anecdotes on God and country, the old West, friends and family, acting, and quotes from others about John Wayne the actor, and John Wayne the man.

It is good to know different sides to a person. In Wayne's own words you see who he was. He was funny, patriotic, and opinionated. John Wayne loved his family, friends and America. He did not take himself seriously-he took his life seriously. Carol Lea Muller has done a good job of showing many side of John Wayne throught his own words.

She received two Emmy Awards as the irrepressible Phyllis on The Mary Tyler Moor Show. . .she won an Oscar for her supporting role as a frustrated housewife in The Last Picture Show. . .she delighted audiences with her deliciously villainous turns as Frau Blucher in Young Frankenstein and Nurse Diesel in High Anxiety. . .and she earned even more award nominations playing a hard-drinking grandmother in Spanglish.

But who, really, is Cloris Leachman?

She's one of the most acclaimed, and unpredictable, actresses of our time. Transforming herself with every role, Cloris Leachman has been dazzling audiences for decades with her unusual gift for both comedy and drama. She's appeared in 11 Broadway plays, 57 films, and 137 television shows and has earned 16 awards and 23 nominations. Now, for the first time, the incomparable Cloris Leachman reflects on her amazing life and illustrious career. . .

From her hometown in Des Moines, Iowa (where she first saw Katharine Hepburn perform on stage, never imagining they would one day do Shakespeare together) to the bright lights of Broadway (where she had to work up the nerve to sing for Rogers and Hammerstein to get the lead in South Pacific) to the television studios of L.A. (where she hopped on producer James Brooks's lap to land the role of Phyllis), Cloris's journey has been filled with laughter and tears, marriage and motherhood, tragedy and triumph.

With surprising candor, she talks about her experiences at the Actor's Studio, her "Peck s bad boy" behavior on the set of The Mary Tyler Moore Show, her work with Mel Brooks and other filmmakers, her return to sitcoms with The Ellen DeGeneres Show and Malcolm in the Middle, and her difficulty shaking off the roles she immerses herself in. She shares wonderfully revealing anecdotes about her co-stars and friends: Marlon Brando, Meryl Streep, Dianne Keaton, Sissy Spacek, Paul Newman, Steve McQueen, and the Kennedy family. She reveals her source of inspiration behind High Anxiety (giant fake breasts) and The Last Picture Show (a disturbing childhood incident). Finally, she speaks frankly about being a celebrity icon, trying to balance her family, career, and boundless creativity energy.

This is the real Cloris Leachman as you've never seen her before.

"The Love That Linked Them" 2009-10-10
By Kevin Killian (San Francisco, CA United States)
Cloris is pretty amazing but I don't care for her, never have, and the purpose of reading this book was to see if a good book might be written by an actress whose work has always turned me off. Well, it certainly is a good book, and I have even revised my opinion of her as an actress slightly. She was never a real beauty but she had brains and a big, Rabelaisian spirit, and she was ambitious and lived life to the fullest! She should have played Auntie Mame, I bet she would have done well.

I remember seeing her as the repressed coach's wife in THE LAST PICTURE SHOW and it's fun to hear the behind the scenes gossip about what was going on there in Texas. Seems like nobody really liked her co-star very much, the young cute Joseph Bottoms. She makes him seem like a bit of a psychopath, thus it makes her winning performance seem all the more unexpected.

Those were her glory days and yet they seem all too short. George Englund's status as the best friend of Marlon Brando, and the big family of boys she gave birth to, left huge holes in her resume so that when she became a star, she seemed already old, and casting her in those Mel Brooks movies as a sort of human freak was the icing on the horror cake. We never got to see her young, just in a parade of bigger than life crazy roles. The funniest part of the book is her chapter about having to play the mother to so many younger stars and how that made her feel! The least funny part was when her husband fell in love with young, luscious Joan Collins and Cloris was left holding the bag. It must make him feel weird being the ghost writer for his wife's memoirs, when he himself was such a schmuck in so many ways. Yet they're still together, which says something for love. Her affairs with Gene Hackman and Peter Viertel are glossed over, and her plans to make love with Andy Williams and Ed Asner sort of comical. I just read Andy Williams' memoirs to see what her has to say about his lust for Cloris, and he says nothing, perhaps for legal reasons?

Part inspirational cancer-survival story, part memoir-as-a-laugh-riot, CANCER SCHMANCER picks up where Fran's last book, Enter Whining, left off. After the publication of that book, Fran's life launched into a downward spiral. She separated from a long and complicated relationship, her TV series started to slip in the ratings, and the health of her beloved dog Chester was failing fast. Then came the mysterious symptoms no doctor could explain. With her trademark sense of humor, Fran tells of her long search for answers and the cancer diagnosis that she ultimately beat. But not before a gold mine of insights were revealed to her about the importance of taking charge of your own health and recognizing what's most important in life.

""Never be passive when it comes to your health."" 2010-01-05
By M. Camp
I've never had cancer, but, just before age 22, I developed a rare illness - minocycline-induced pseudotumor cerebri. It lasted for several months and I have never felt worse. The symptoms were hard to describe and I didn't always appear (visibly) to be ill. It was a very difficult time for me.

It was caused by a medicine prescribed by my dermatologist. It was supposed to clear up my skin. I was NOT supposed to make me sick. In fact, the doctor didn't even mention that there were ANY possible "side effects." He was the doctor. I was just 21 and wanted clear skin. - It was inconceivable to me that a medicine for something so simple could possibly be dangerous.

I later learned, through my own research, that I was predisposed to be more likely to be affected by it due to my weight and other factors. (While I did weigh more than my ideal weight, I was not obese.)

This book gives an interesting perspective and makes me more determined than ever to take charge of my health and be my own advocate. Kudos to Fran for sharing what she learned and making us all more aware.

"This book should have been the one called Enter Whining!!" 2009-07-05

Let me start by saying I am a HUGE fan of Ms. Drescher! I have the seasons of The Nanny on DVD and have seen every episode many, many times! I love that show! I watched and liked her short-lived show "Living With Fran", and bought and read her first book Enter Whining.

However, this book just made me angry. First lets start with the cover with her "be Strong" tank top...I feel that frankly, she was not really all that strong. I don't know why she wrote the book as a "strong, cancer survivor"?? I guess that is how she feels. But, I feel that she was just a lucky celebrity. She was lucky in that she had only a small cancerous tumor, and had it removed. That was it. I don't know how she had to be all that strong. I really don't feel she had that much to do with it.

She didn't have to have emergency surgery to keep her alive. She did not have to suffer through terrible chemo and radiation, she did not have to deal with any re-occurances. Getting through all those things definately make you a strong survivor!!

All she did was be able to afford to see many, many specialists. Get star treatment by getting fast appoinments, and getting the actual doctors to call her right back. She got a private nurse at the hospital. She had servants at home. She got to take all the time she needed to recover, without worrying about the bills piling up or taking care of the kids or losing her job, or how to pay the massive medical bills...things real people deal with. What did she get to do, vacation in France!

Now, before you get on my case, I had cancer myself. I, like Fran, went many years without it being diagnosed. My cancer was very rare, and was very large, and almost killed me. I had to have emergency surgery to save my life. I was sick for many years before I sort-of recovered.

But, since I did not have to endure chemo and radiation, and I have not had any reoccurances, Thank God,... I don't consider myself a strong cancer survivor at all. I just consider myself lucky to be alive. I think Fran should have just been thankful for her good fortune, and gone on with her life rather than write this book.
